DOS Glorious DOS- Good site for Bootdisk Images

OK... Wel I'm doing some work in good old DOS 6.22 today.... Speaking as someone who has seen the boxes in the Microsoft Museum this is a painfull experience.

In order to play with DOS I had to fina

a) A Floppy disk drive...

b) A DOS bootable disk image

c) A floppy disk

A/C weren't too easy a task- I had a USB floppy at home and some stoopid supplier of our continues to use floppies for drivers.

I found a GREAT site for boot disks though- you just download the EXE and it writes you a boot disk.

Think I've Fallen Off The Wagon

...with my exercise routine?

Well I have. but only in the last two days.

I've been kicking ass otherwise.

Weight was down to 106.9 last time I weighed in but it's much more muscle than flab now. I've been exercising a lot more- my fave trick at the moment is walking up big hills. I went up Flagstaff from Booth Rd on Sat in 42.26 minutes. I usually do Mt Cargill on Sundays but one of my staff memebers and a number of my paddling mates corrupted me with my own duty free grog on Sat night so I crashed on the couch with the dog for Sunday.

Had a bad day for eating today and yesterday- back on track from tonight.

Multiple Startup projects in VS.NET

When you are writing and debugging SmartClient applications yu often want to be able to seamlessly debug across the web service boundary. That is, you want to be able to set break points in both your server and cient side code.

This often means that you need to have both projects running in the debugger.

I just found out that VS.NET supports this nativly.

Go to the Solution Properties of your solution and check the 'Multiple Startup projects' radio button. You can then set the order in which certain projects are started up. e.g. Start the web services first and then startup your smart client project.

Very cool- you learn something new every day.

Jogging Through VS.NET - Contour Shuttle Pro 2 + VS.NET + Coderush

OK.... so y'all thought I had dropped of the face of the earth. It's been a stressful wee while at work.

But here is some cool new VS.NET foo for you.

I've been trying out the use of my Countour Designs Shuttle Pro v2 controller, the type you use for video editing, with VS.NET and Coderush.

It allows me to use the control surface to navigate my way around my code, jog in one hand, mouse in the other. I've also got it setup for a few other commands. It uses the Coderush smart navigation and smart selection stuff as well as Coderush markers.

This is my first cut at a settings file for the Shuttle and I'll probably change it after I've been using it for a while. but, I thought I'd share it anyway.

Here is the settings file and the HTML file that shows what each button/dial does.

Software Patents

Clemens has a GREAT piece on software patents.

I agree with him entirely- there are some strange/insnane patents being awarded. But, we do not need to throw the baby out with the bath water.....

The Appropriateness of Communicating While Abluting

How appropriate is it to yack on the phone while sitting on the john?

Reason I ask is that I was just in the toilets here in Redmond and someone was in one of the stalls talking on their phone while making the most ghastly set of peripheral noises....

Is the ever appropriate?

When talking to
the wife?
the boss?
the National Radio?

Land Of The Free My Ass......

In the final judgements of the current judicial term the Supreme Court (USA) have released a Castle like judgement allowing city authorities to kick people out of their properties to allow commercial development.

[UPDATE]

*whoops* It happened again....

Well I should get a good nights sleep tonight because Air NZ, bless their souls, have decided to let me sit in 2K on my AKL-SFO leg...So I can only conclude that Rod and I are not really getting 'First Class' but rather sitting as Business passengers in first class seats.

Still... I'm not complaining.... closest thing I'll get to the Lie Flat Businessman for a good wee while yet :-)

I'm Addicted To Outlook Mobile

OK... so Outlook mobile truely does run my entire life for me....

You see if something needs to be done, unless it is in there it will not get done....

eg.g From today.

Wifey, who is working in Wellington as an advisor to the minister of ACC, sent me a meeting request titled “Shut cat flap so cat can't get out”... I can just accept it and now I'll have no worries getting the kitty to the kitty summer resort tommorow.

Marvelous!

MSDN Regional Director.....

OK..... the flair post from last night was really harping back to some stuff that Rory was going on about earlier in the year.

I posted the new flair (logo) to the left last night to see if anyone noticed... which they didn't... but now I can announce good and proper.

Someone, well Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom (or generosity) has decided to let me wear a Regional Director hat for a period. Which is all really rather cool.

It's quite an intimidating group to be associated with though :-) Lots of names of people whose books I've read and looked up to when I was a little whipper snapper developer......

Anyway... it's all rather exciting. Will hopefuly give me more opportunities to work with the community and evangelise technology as I an want to do.
