EOS 20D *Drool*..... Jogle... I see you drooling from here.

This one goes out to Mr Jogle..... Hope King Kong provides the goods to let you have one of these- you can send me your 10D body if you get one :-)

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081909canon_eos20d.asp

Canon EOS 20DCanon has today revealed the EOS 20D, the eight megapixel successor to the EOS 10D. The new sensor is however only half the story the EOS 20D has a slightly smaller and lighter body, a brand new 9-point AF system, near instant power on time, 5 frames per second continuous shooting, support for EF-S digital lenses, true RAW+JPEG, a B&W mode and USB 2.0. In total we've counted approximately 30 noteworthy improvements on the EOS 20D. Naturally we have a detailed eleven page hands-on preview of the EOS 20D and will have sample images available in a few days time. Price on the street around US$1,500.

*Now if they'd only get around to putting a proper 35mm Sensor in their 35mm bodies (at the prosumer level) we could all have proper wide angle photos!

[Update]

Best (cheapest reputable) place to buy this in Aus/NZ is funnily enough my local camera shop. www.jonathans.co.nz

oooh yeah, its a badboy camera alright. I dont know if its enough of a jump for me to upgrade though, I'm wanting to buy two L lenses first, then a macro and then upgrade my fisheye and 50mm before I'd look at a new body. with my sisters wedding coming up I might even buy a film body before I get a new digital SLR.

So I'll either skip this generation or I'll upgrade to the 1D Mk II or one of the other seriously pro cameras..... why? Environmental sealing, the smaller crop factor, a spot meter and the sack full of kittens.

oh... and the wide angle thing...

Yes a full frame sensor would be great, and yes they have a fantastic one in the 1Ds.... but they can't even produce just the sensor for US$1500 let alone put it into a body costing that much.

Thats the thinking behind the EF-s lenses, they can make a smaller/lighter/cheaper wideangle that is 10mm at the wide end (roughly 16mm when compared to a 35 system) The only problem I have with them is that they will worth very little when they do finally move to FF sensors in 4 or 5 camera generations time

the fact that they can cram more pixels into the 1.6 sized sensor with LESS noise then the 10D and at the same price just goes to show that the chip technology still has legs. Microlenses and on chip smarts are still in their infancy as this huge jump in quality shows. there are reviews that claim the new chip performs as well (in terms of noise) at 1600 ISO as the 10D does at 400. and the 10D is more then usable at 400 ISO.

the increase in shooting speed in the 20D is also partly due to the fact they can have a smaller image box and a smaller mirror.

I'd rather see them push for higher dynamic range in the current sized chips then go to the larger ones. When the image quality stops improving by leaps and bounds, it's time to go to a larger chip.

For we SCUBA geeks wide angle is UBER important. Not only do we lose wideness with the framecrop on most digi SLRs, but, when we get underwater we lose even more angle (at least on the lower end housings)...

wait to see how the EF-s 10-22 mm F3.5-F4.5 looks...

At US$800 it is a boat load cheaper then the comparable (in focal length, not image quality) EF 16-35mm f/2.8L that comes it at US$1340 and is almost twice the weight and 3.5 cm longer.
